Located in the Northern part of the country, Milan is one of Italy’s biggest and most urbanely developed cities, one of the world’s capitals of fashion and design. It’s the centre of the Italian stock market, and one of the worlds leaders in silk production.
Conquered by Napoleon during the 19th Century, Milan was once the capital of the Cisalpine Republic. In the following years, the city became somewhat of a cultural centre of Europe. Mozart wrote three Operas in Milan during this time, and today many beautiful Opera Houses and theatres remain for visitors to enjoy.
The city also boasts the world’s second largest Gothic Cathedral, the Duomo, with a very large collection of marble statues inside, more than 3,500 individual pieces in fact. Most visitors also make the climb to the top of the Cathedral’s dome to enjoy a view over all of the city, as far as the Alps on a clear day.
Twice a year, Milan is host to the biggest names, faces and labels of the fashion Industry. Major women's collections are shown in February and September, but any time of year is a good time for shopping in Milan. A must see is the exclusive boutique shopping complex Galleria Vittorio. Here you will find not only the biggest fashion labels but a beautiful ornate building and some excellent authentic Italian coffee houses.
